Energy Environmental Impacts - Air Quality

Energy consumption is the largest controllable source of emissions that impact air quality (e.g., SO2, NOx, primary PM2.5) and climate, including greenhouse gases (GHGs) and near-term climate forcers (NTCFs), such as particulate sulfate and black carbon. The U.S. energy landscape is changing dramatically, driven by economic developments that highlight the role of resource cost on U.S. energy choices. Investigators at Rutgers are linking energy and environmental models at regional and national levels, from hourly to decadal time scales, to comprehensively consider the effects of regulatory policy on climate and air quality.

Carbon Negative Technologies - Carbon Capture and Storage

Carbon sequestration is one of many technologies that will be needed to mitigate some of the risks of a large increase in atmospheric CO2. Rutgers is leading an effort to evaluate geological sequestration of supercritical CO2 in saline aquifers (water-bearing sands) both onshore between Massachusetts and Virginia and offshore in previously explored but unproductive hydrocarbon targets.

Cross Cutting Technologies - Catalysis

Production of many synthetic materials and chemical products for various uses generally relies on catalytic processes that are energy dependent. One of the goals of catalysis research at Rutgers is to develop more efficient catalysts that require less energy, produce less toxic waste products while preserving or increasing product yields. The Rutgers Catalysis Research Center (RCRC's) was thus formed with the mission to development novel homogeneous and heterogenous catalysts, photocatalysts, biocatalysts, and nanocatalysts that enable greener and energy-efficient routes for the productions of various fine/pharmaceuticals, commodity chemicals, biofuels, plastics and synthetic materials. Researchers also study fundamental, surface science and theoretical aspects of catalysts and catalysis and investigations of their structures and their structure-activity relationships.
